Prisoner of light ii

Picking up a second image I did not have time to provide an analysis for while I was away – this one again from my friend Jessica Islam Lia (evening sun.).

Prisoner of light ii by evening sun.

The compositional structure of this image is, generally speaking, very simple. That simplicity is the reason it carries such impact. The elements in use are Chiaroscuro (extremely high contrast) and and out-of-the-frame direction. Alone, this combination will deliver high impact.

This image, however, goes a little further. The addition of a textured overlay – the harsh lines that have a predominantly left-to-right layout – to the model’s pose, and the motions inherent in her hair, a static silhouette takes on a sense of painful release. The light is no longer just a force on the left, but one that reaches deep into the empty space on the right of the image, powerful tendrils passing through the subject.

A very strong emotional piece, the use of texture adds to the mood.

  1. Thank you Rick. 🙂
