Daybreak Over Badwater Basin

I found myself captured by this stunning image from my friend Andy Poupart (andy_57).

Daybreak Over Badwater Basin

The texture of the foreground, both in the larger veined pattern that extends to the distance, and the finer grains of white salt, are amazingly compelling. Despite the competition from the more colourful sky, they are the first point one focuses on, to be drawn from the anchor in the right corner through the meshed network to the far distance: it is a net from which there is no escape.

In the distance, above the horizon, things get more interesting still, from a compositional standpoint. We find a dominant mountain balanced against a ranger of more subdued ridges: silhouette against layers. On the one hand, prominence; on the other, complex weaving of tones. That the whole sits under a pastel sky only helps to emphasise the magnificent power of nature.

The perfect way to start a day.
